2016 – Midpoint

It is now July, which means we are roughly half-way through the 2016 baseball season.  It’s a good time to look back at our 2016 goals for both baseballs as well as lineup cards (current status in italics).

BASEBALLS

MLB: Three MLB commemorative/special balls, not necessarily all from 2016

Update: We have gotten two MLB commemorative balls so far, both from the 2016 season.  One is “A Century of Cubs at Wrigley Field” ball that I got at a Cubs @ Nationals game in June.  The other is a “Final Season Turner Field” ball that was given to us by a friend who got it from an umpire after a June game.

Turner Field

MiLB: We are only missing an Arizona League ball and a Northwest League ball.  Our best chance of getting one or both this year would be via a trade.  Also, we hope to get at least one special/commemorative MiLB ball.  The New York-Penn League All Star Game will likely be the best opportunity.

Update: Nothing new MiLB-wise.  The same friend who sent us the Turner Field ball is planning to go to a Northwest League game later this season, so if he is fortunate enough to get multiple balls, that might work out for us.  We are on track to attend the New York-Penn League All Star Game.

Independent League: We already have a Frontier League ball, but the Frontier League also started using a special ball with red-blue laces last year, so it’d be nice to get one of those.  There are a few new start-up leagues planned for this season, including the relatively local Empire League.

Update: We haven’t gotten any new independent league balls this season.  There was a chance we were going to make it to a Frontier League, but that is highly unlikely now.  And the  Empire League is using generic baseballs.

NCAA: We already added one new Division I conference baseball, the Mountain West Conference, earlier this year, and hope to add at least one other.

Update: We added balls from the Patriot League, Ohio Valley Conference and West Coast Conference.

Patriot League

College Summer League: A couple new ones would be nice, including the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League.

Update: Nothing new yet, although we are hoping to get a Futures Collegiate Baseball League All Star Game ball next week.

International: One of the four World Baseball Classic 2016 Qualifiers will take place in NY (a pic of the 2012 WBC Qualifier ball is below).  Hopefully, one or more of the four teams – Brazil, Great Britain, Israel and Pakistan – will use their own baseballs during warm-ups.  Additionally, Cuban and Japanese teams will play locally against Can-Am League teams.

Update: Nothing new yet.  I saw the Japanese team play, but as best I could tell, they didn’t have any Japanese baseballs with them.

LINEUP CARDS

More/new MLB lineup cards  We have been to two MLB games so far thi season, and got a lineup card at one of them, an Orioles @ Red Sox game in April.  We got the lineup card from the Orioles bullpen

Orioles

New MiLB leagues/teams

Leagues: South Atlantic League; Midwest League; International League  We scored an International League lineup card from a RailRiders @ PawSox game

Teams: Pawtucket Red Sox, Hartford Yard Goats (new team in 2016), Reading Fightin Phils, Binghamton Mets, Portland Sea Dogs, Altoona Curve, Erie Sea Wolves, Hagerstown Suns, Brooklyn Cyclones, Lowell Spinners, Hagerstown Suns, Lakewood BlueClaws, Potomac Nationals, Wilmington Blue Rocks, etc.  The Sea Wolves don’t give out their lineup card.  We had a shot at a Fightin’ Phils card but they blew me off after a tough loss.

New Indy Leagues/teams

Leagues: The Empire League (new league in 2016), Frontier League  Nothing new here

Teams: New Britain Bees (new team in 2016), York Revolution, Long Island Ducks, Quebec Capitales  We have gotten five Bees lineup cards already this season; we also got a Lancaster Barnstormers lineup card that was much nicer than the one we got from them last season

Barnstormers (May 26, 2016)

NCAA: We don’t have any NCAA lineup cards yet, so any conferences/teams would be great  We did very well scoring college lineup cards in the soring, highlighted by Harvard, Tulane and the University of Central Florida

Tulane (April 2, 2016) (2)

International Teams: Our only international lineup card at the moment is from the Ottawa Champions.  We should have an opportunity to try and get at least one lineup card from a team from another country  Nothing yet, although I did get the New Jersey Jackals lineup card from a game against the Shikoku Island (Japan) All Star team

Jackals, Shikoku (6.16.16)

So far this season, we have gotten 32 lineup cards, bringing our overall total to 95.
